This 4-4-2 Flat high-counter setup (Import Code: 44SC#8g?C&sJ) is built for one specific problem: you win the ball in midfield, and your striker is already in the box. Not running from the halfway line — already there. Ronaldo as a Poacher does exactly that. But the setup only works if you understand what he is and what he is not.

The Setup
Formation: 4-4-2 Flat. Build-Up Style: Counter. Defensive Approach: High. Line Height: 65–70.
Counter build-up keeps your shape when possession is lost. High defensive pressure forces turnovers near the opponent’s box. The line height is the part most players get wrong. In FC 27, the Defensive Approach locks your Line Height into a fixed band. High covers 61–90, with a default of 70. You cannot set a Balanced-range number like 55 while High is selected — the game will not let you. Set it to 65–70. 65 is the conservative end of High; 70 is the default. If you are getting burned by through balls, do not try to force a lower number inside High. Switch Defensive Approach to Balanced and then set Line Height to 50–55. That is the correct lever, not an invalid slider value.
Player Roles
Ronaldo (ST | Poacher, Attack++). This is the core of the build, and it comes with a warning. EA’s official ratings page lists Ronaldo at 65 acceleration and 68 sprint speed. He is not going to outrun a recovery defender to a through ball. What he will do is find the six-yard box, attack cutbacks, and finish with 89 positioning and 89 finishing. Do not play him as a runner. Play him as the end point.
White (ST | Advanced, Attack++). This is your runner. Brian White at 77 pace and 78 sprint speed gives you the vertical threat Ronaldo no longer provides. He is reliable, not elite — 75 acceleration means he will not blow past every full-back. If you have access to Ellen White, her pace in the high 80s makes her the stronger option for this specific role. The Advanced instruction keeps her high and stretching the line while Ronaldo arrives late.
Futre (LM | Inside Forward, Attack++). Cuts inside from the left to combine with the strikers and open the cutback lane for Ronaldo.
de Jong (CM | Box-to-Box, Balanced). Covers ground, wins tackles, and plays the first pass after a turnover.
Fellaini (CM | Box-to-Box, Balanced++). The physical anchor. 90 physicality and 78 defending make him a ball-winner and second-ball magnet. His 74 pace means he is not your recovery runner — let him hold the central zone and win headers, not chase a fast CAM across the pitch.
Paralluelo (RM | Wide Playmaker, Attack++). Holds width on the right and pins the opposing left-back.
Mendy (LB | Fullback, Defend) / Koundé (RB | Fullback, Defend). Both stay home. In a high counter 4-4-2, your full-backs are your insurance against the through ball.
van Dijk (CB | Defender, Defend+) / Militão (CB | Defender, Defend). Van Dijk wins the first ball. Militão covers the channel. If you are getting burned by a fast striker, the fix is the defensive approach, not the center-back roles.
Alisson (GK | Goalkeeper, Defend). Standard. No sweeper keeper needed at this depth.
How to Make It Work
Do not play Ronaldo like a winger. Treat him as a penalty-box striker who arrives late while White does the running. Your first pass after a turnover should go wide or into the Advanced striker’s feet — not into Ronaldo as a chase ball.
When you recover possession, do not force the through ball on the first touch. One short pass to de Jong or Fellaini, one wide switch to Paralluelo, then trigger the run. Ronaldo will already be inside the box by the time the cross arrives.
If your opponent is spamming lobbed through balls, the correct adjustment is Defensive Approach: Balanced + Line Height: 50–55. Do not try to set a Balanced-range number while High is selected.

Who This Is For
This suits you if you are comfortable defending in a mid-to-high block and want a repeatable pattern: win the ball, go wide, find the Poacher. It does not suit you if you expect Ronaldo to be your counter-attacking runner — he will not be.
The setup is free. The personnel is what wins games. If you need a pace option to pair with Ronaldo — or want to turn the Advanced striker role into a genuine difference-maker — pick up FC 27 coins here and build the front two around the Poacher instead of forcing him into a footrace he cannot win.
Import the setup using the code 44SC#8g?C&sJ, test it for five matches, and adjust the Defensive Approach first — not the Line Height inside it. The tactic will not make Ronaldo faster. It will put him where his finishing still matters.
