3-Back Formations (5 total)

All about overloading the midfield. Great for attacking, but your defense will be pretty vulnerable.

What are the meta formations right now?

Just like players, formations have a meta. The same squad plays completely differently depending on your setup. Here are the top three formations right now:

4-4-1-1 | Key positions: ST, CAM, CM

This is one of the most balanced setups in the current meta. It is solid on both attack and defense, and the transitions feel super smooth. Even a lot of pros are using it.

  • On the attack, it shifts into a 4-2-4 or 4-1-3-2. The main strat is linking up your central CAM and ST while using the wings to stretch the defense.
  • On defense, it quickly drops into a tight 4-4-2 block, locking down the midfield and backline so the opponent gets zero scoring chances.

4-5-1(2) | Key positions: LM / RM, CM

The best choice for possession play right now. Once you get the ball, as long as you do not throw, it is almost impossible to lose it. If skills are even, your opponent will basically spend the whole match chasing your shadow.

  • Having 3 CMs gives you a natural numbers advantage in the midfield. Dribbling, intercepting, and pressing are super efficient, making it easy to cut off any short passing plays through the middle.
  • The downside is it really tests your patience. Without a CAM to help build the attack, it can be tough to break down heavy defensive setups, so you have to keep cycling the ball wide to find gaps.

4-4-2 | Key position: CM

The most classic formation with no obvious flaws. The playstyle is pretty direct, which is exactly why it is always meta.

  • On attack, the two STs put massive pressure on the backline. If the opponent midfield fails to track back in time, once you break through, you are gone.
  • On defense, the wings and central midfield cover almost the whole pitch. It is really hard to break down, making it super forgiving.
